In men, it often appears as a receding hairline that evolves into full male pattern baldness. In women, it usually begins as a thinning area at the part that gradually expands. The good news is that Dr. Marcelo Antunes and our talented team employ advanced Austin hair restoration technology to halt the progress of hair loss and restore a more youthful, full head of hair.

The basics of hair growth

When you are born, you have anywhere between 90,000 and 150,000 hair follicles on your scalp – the total of the hair-growing engines you will have for your lifetime. Each follicle grows hair on a cycle of:

  • Anagen (growth): During the initial growth phase, a hair follicle rapidly grows new, long hair.
  • Catagen (transition): Once the hair stops growing, it transitions into a more firm, stable hair.
  • Telogen (dormancy): Once the follicle has completed the growth and transition, it becomes dormant. This phase can last for up to 100 days.

When the hair follicles are at their best, any hair you lose is rapidly replaced with another, which is why you can lose significant amounts of hair without thinning or balding. Hair loss occurs when the follicles cannot return to the anagen (growth) phase and go dormant or produce thinner, weaker hair strands.

Hair loss in men

Up to 85% of men will suffer hair loss at some point in their lives, with 25% of them starting as early as age 25. Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, is a genetic predisposition to hair loss that follows a basic pattern that begins with a receding hairline and progresses balding on the crown, with hair remaining above the ears and on the back of the head. When addressed early enough, male pattern baldness can often be slowed with the right treatments.

Hair loss in women

While hair loss is less prevalent in women than it is in men, it is still a common problem that we treat here at Face Austin. Women often see hair loss appearing as a wider part, over time, affecting the entire scalp. In the early stages, hair loss in women can be hidden with hair styling but becomes increasingly visible over time. Women also often suffer from traction alopecia, a form of hair loss from the pull of tighter hairstyles.
